Hubris. It seems like the problems that progressives are concerned about are the ones the solutions to which imbue them with power. Countries that have become industrialized no longer have dangerous growth, so the solution would seem to be to promote industrialization, but that doesn’t give them power. The US population is only growing due to immigration. Maybe the elites just need purpose in their lives. But they do seem evil.

The first book about depopulation that I read was 2005 "Fewer: How the New Demography of Depopulation Will Shape Our Future" by centrist/left-leaning Ben Wattenberg.

Of course, the tidal wave of 'Population Explosion' catastrophists have drowned the people speaking the truth. What is most shocking is the number of people on the right who express the opinion that "too many people" is a problem and fewer people would be better.
